Friend Makin' Mondays

I am new to blogging. But sometimes I just need to let out so much energy, and Facebook can only tolerate so much of my verbage. So I going to try blogging, to see if this is an alternative outlet to my energies.

 — My friend Kenlie (www.alltheweigh.com) is hosting a meet and greet called “Friend Makin’ Mondays. Since I am new, I have been instructed to take a moment to answer this week’s question(s) on my own blog then add my link in the comments section at: www.alltheweigh.com so everybody can all see my FMM questions and answers. I am also supposed to invite my blog readers to add their links there too so everyone has to opportunity to be seen. However, this is my primary post, so I have no readers. The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers so take a moment to post your own FMM post and comment on a couple of other posts. Now it’s time for this week’s topic!

 Friend Makin’ Mondays: The Basics
  1. How often do you make your bed? I make my bed daily, and pretty quickly after waking up. Otherwise, my forgetfulness gets the best of me and it may not get done.
  2. What are you currently reading? I have forgotten my love for reading. But I recently bought a book “Leading the War: Salvation Army Officership as Vocational Extremism”. I enjoy service work, and I have a number of friends that are Salvation Army Officers.
  3. Do you go to bed at a certain time? If so, what time? I used to crawl into bed by 10pm nightly. However, since my work schedule has become so flexible lately, I stay up till midnight pretty often. Usually because my mind cannot shut down any sooner.
  4. What are your favorite TV shows currently? I just finished binge-watching NCIS and Game of Thrones. I am currently binge-watching Blue Bloods.
  5. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve eaten lately? I avoid weird foods. But lately I have been sprinkling shredded cheese on my favorite potato chips, and heating it up in the microwave. Not weird, but not normal either.
  6. Do you have any trips planned? If so, where are you going next? No trips currently planned. I just returned from visiting my Mom in Iowa.
  7. How many cups of coffee do you drink per day? If you’re not a coffee drinker, what you do prefer? I am a lazy drinker. I drink whatever is available. So most days, I have at least one cup of coffee, usually at AA meetings. But I also have the problem of not shutting down my brain at night. So I try to avoid it in the evenings.
  8. It’s Saturday night, and you decided to stay in? What do you do to entertain yourself? (We’re talking hobbies, interests, etc.) I watch Netflix.
  9. When you give a gift do you wrap it, or do you put it in a gift bag? Christmas, I gift wrap. Every other event, I gift bag.
  10. Share one thing from last week that made you smile? Watching my mom practice for her upcoming Special Olympics. She had a knee replacement a year ago, and this weekend she will compete in the 50 yard dash in the Iowa Special Olympics. She is really walking, but she gives it all she has. And her friends and her advocate cheer her on, with each step.
Now it’s your turn to answer this week’s questions.

Thanks for listening.

Honduras - notes from last night's meeting

You MUST get your deposit of $100 to Anita Pannell at FBC as soon as possible. We had a GREAT turnout last night and Dr. Lowe expects a waiting list this year. The deposit helps secure you a spot on the team. The cost for this year's trip is $1,700

Pam needs everybody's paperwork as soon as possible, this includes a photocopy of your passport. We had problems last year with incomplete and incorrect paperwork and the team was punished with $500 in penalties. We can't afford to let these fines happen this year, so your paperwork needs to be sent in now. Even if you don't have your passport yet, still get your paperwork in. Otherwise you might be responsible for paying your own fine for wrong or missing documents.

06/20/09 - 06/27/09
Erandique, Honduras (http://www.traveladventures.org/continents/southamerica/erandique.shtml)
"fairly long drive" to this village
The town has a plaza (with a statue) and 2 Catholic Churches along with cobblestone streets. There are also power lines and poles with transformers, so hopefully we will have electricity for the entire week. :-)

Our flights are from New Orleans to Houston to San Pedro Sula to Tegucigalpa

There won't be a construction crew this year. It is cost-prohibitive to have a construction crew this year. Plus this village really doesn't have a construction need at this time.

Our shipping date is Friday April 17th.
If you are sending clothes to give away, each item needs to be
(1) new or gently used
(2) washed
(3) folded
(4) placed in a zip lock bag
(5) the size written on the zip lock bag
(6) placed in a box to be shipped out Friday April 17th

Clothes that don't meet this criteria will not be taken. We simply don't have the manpower and time to go through the clothing items once we arrive in Honduras. And we don't want to give away clothes that are obviously second hand. Let's be practical here.

We are also encouraging people to ship their belongings down ahead of time. You can ship your clothes, bedding, fans, etc in boxes ahead of time. But you are responsible for making your own list of what is in your box and keeping up with it. That way you know you have shipped down enough underwear.

Cloth diapers
Linda Lowe and her group are going to be putting together cloth diapers for this year's trip. If you want to contribute to that endeavor, contact her.

Our next meeting will probably be in about a month. And once the pills arrive, you will be invited to help with pill-packing parties.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Getting geared up,

Tammy

WELCOME

Welcome to the Terry Lowe / Pam Rouse Honduras Mission Team! It is a joy and a pleasure to have you join us on this year’s adventure to Honduras. If you are looking for an opportunity to share God’s love through your actions while sleeping on foam mattresses on a concrete floor next to your neighbor and showering in a dark, solitary shower stall with a water bag hanging over your head, then this is one major reality check for you. You’ll grow closer to God as well as your team members in this once in a lifetime opportunity to learn that God is truly infinite as well as international. Welcome aboard!

We are excited that you could join us this year. My name is Tammy Matlock. I am the PR person who distributes weekly e-mails to the team. This helps make sure that we are all on the same page and it frees up our team leaders to focus on more important things. Terry Lowe and Pam Rouse are the co-Captains of our team (our fearless leaders). Please add the following e-mail addresses to your contact list so you can receive updates from us.

Terry Lowe, Co-Captain terrylowe@megagate.com
Pam Rouse, Co-Captain prouse111@aol.com
Tammy Matlock, PR Person tmatlock@aultmantyner.com

The most important things for you to do immediately is fill out your paperwork and get it to Pam Rouse ASAP, and start the process on obtaining your passport. The passport can take 2-3 months to get back. So that needs to be started this week. You pick up a passport form at your nearest Post Office. Fill it out. I think you have to attach a certified copy of your birth certificate. You have to get a passport photo. These can be taken at The Post Office, Wal-Green’s or Kinko’s. Then take your completed passport form, your certified birth certificate, and your passport photos, and 2 checks to the Post Office to send off. Then two to three months later, you will have your passport. Once you receive it, you will have to photocopy it and get that copy to Pam Rouse.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ITEMS NEEDED
-> Willing Spirit to serve, no prior experience needed
-> $100 Deposit (made out to FBC and include "Honduras mission team" written on the memo line)
-> The team covenant filled out
-> The Mission Service Application filled out
-> Medical History & Medical Release filled out
-> a clean copy of your Vital Statistic Page from your passport (it must not expire within 6 months of departure!!)
-> The nurses, physicians, dentists, and any other "professionals" need to provide Pam a copy of their current annual license and their professional diploma.
Listen to the Life of the Morbidly Obese - Author Unknown
LISTEN TO THE LIFE OF THE MORBIDLY OBESE
Author Unknown
LISTEN to the embarrassment we encounter in our every day life. The name-calling, stares, rude comments and looks of disgust we endure battling the last acceptable form of discrimination. People we meet that give us a far wider berth than we need when passing us on the street, in the hall … in life. Afraid that somehow our disease of obesity might be contagious.
LISTEN to our apprehension as we expertly eye the chair. Will we break it, or will we fit. Will we ever fit into life, as "normal" people know it?
LISTEN to our agony as we just walk and perform the simple activities of daily living on joints screaming in pain from an incredible burden they were never meant to carry.
LISTEN to the pain of our humiliation when ridiculed by a doctor for "allowing" ourselves to get so fat. Realizing even the doctor's office is not a "safe" place, we tend to neglect our health even more. Hey doctor, didn't you take an oath to help?
LISTEN to our hopelessness after being turned down over and over for a job or promotion because we don't "match the corporate image" of the person they envision for this position.
LISTEN to our guilt. Because of our size, we feel we've cheated those we love out of the parent, spouse, child or friend we feel we should've been. Our embarrassment has now become theirs as well.
LISTEN to our anticipation as we eagerly embark on yet another diet. THIS will be the one. This time I WILL SUCEED!
LISTEN to our frustration as once again we fail at another attempt to lose weight, reinforcing once again our feelings of worthlessness, failure and defeat.
LISTEN to our fear for what life holds if we don't have surgery. We try to ignore it, to stuff it down, but when we are brutally honest with ourselves, we realize an early death is an almost certainty.
LISTEN to our indecision as we do extensive research, trying to outweigh the risk of complications (up to and including death) versus the chance of a new life. A chance to improve our health, move without pain, play with our children, the opportunity to just "fit in" to society.
LISTEN to our indecision as we second-guess our decision to have surgery. As we ask ourselves, "Should I try just one more diet?" … And tell ourselves, "If I only had more willpower." Knowing that willpower isn’t the whole answer.
LISTEN to us as we eagerly meet with the surgeon, with our five-page, single-spaced, list of questions in hand. Let down by the medical profession in the past, can I really trust this person who looks at me with compassion, as he assures me I'm a "good candidate" and he can help? Please God, I want to believe him, tell me I'm not setting myself up for failure once again.
LISTEN to our feelings of helplessness as we place our future in the hands of an insurance company. Fully aware that with a simple denial letter, all the work we have done to this point, may be pointless. This surgery is not without cost, physical, emotional and monetary.
LISTEN to our joy as we open the long awaited "approval letter" or obtain financing to make this dream a reality.
LISTEN to us as we grasp for a chance at improved health, of moving with ease and just living life as a "normal" person.
LISTEN to our renewed hope of living long enough to see our children grow up, get married, play with grandchildren and grow old alongside our mate.
LISTEN to our fear as we roll into the surgical suite. The sights, the smells, the needles, the faceless people behind the masks. Do you care? Do you understand, or will you too make cracks about my weight once I'm asleep? My life is now in your hands, please take care of me. I have a brand new life ahead of me, and so much to live for.
LISTEN to the sigh of relief as we wake up in pain … but alive! Stand up, walk a few steps, cough and deep breathe. Sure nurse, whatever you say, I can handle it … because I'm alive!
LISTEN to our delight as the weight starts to drop off, realizing this is for real. We are actually on the losing side.
LISTEN to our misery as the body we once knew so well, now betrays us with nausea and vomiting when we attempt to eat.
LISTEN to our frustration as we attempt to do something as simple as drinking a glass of water.
LISTEN to our panic at the first plateau or weight gain. As that little voice inside tells us, "Once again I'm a failure."
LISTEN to us relax and let out our breath as we watch the numbers on the scale edge down once again. Plateau over. Renewed hope. Maybe I will make it after all.
LISTEN to our efforts to move as we slowly and painfully attempt to exercise in a body that is still morbidly obese.
LISTEN to our confusion as our emotions wreck havoc with us. Why am I crying? Why do I feel depressed? Why am I mean and snapping at the ones I love? I don't like this person that has taken over my emotions.
LISTEN to our sense of accomplishment the first time we walk a mile. It rivals the high of any runner completing their first marathon.
LISTEN to our depression when we realize we can no longer soothe our emotions with food. We now have to learn to feel and deal with these emotions.
LISTEN to our tears as we mourn the loss of that brief but satisfying sensation of gratification we once obtained from the "comfort foods" we can no longer have.
LISTEN to our obsession surrounding the scale, vitamins, protein drinks and carb counts, determined not to fail "this time".
LISTEN to our sense of accomplishment as we pass up that calorie laden, high carbohydrate treat, telling ourselves, "My new life is sweeter than any dessert."
LISTEN to our elation as we reach that "century mark" that once seemed so distant, but now is a reality.
LISTEN to our resolve to reach our goals. Moving the weight on the scale down another notch, reaching a new "century" of numbers, wearing the dream outfit and attaining our "goal" weight.
LISTEN to the gratefulness in our hearts as we thank our surgeon for not only their technical skills, but equally important, their understanding and compassion for the morbidly obese. Thank you doctor for the opportunity to rejoin society and live a fulfilling life.
LISTEN to our amazement as we come to the realization that "reaching goal" wasn't the most important thing in life. It was the lessons we learned, the friends we made and the sense of accomplishment we gained along the way.
LISTEN, don't talk, don't give advice, don't judge, just listen. And then, maybe then, you will start to understand the life of a morbidly obese person.
To prepare yourself, start studying Daddy's Rules for Dating.
Daddy's Rules for Dating
Your dad's rules for your boyfriend (or for you if you're a guy) :
Rule One:
If you pull into my driveway and honk you'd better be delivering a package, because you're sure not picking anything up.
Rule Two:
You do not touch my daughter in front of me. You may glance at her, so long as you do not peer at anything below her neck. If you cannot keep your eyes or hands off of my daughter's body, I will remove them.
Rule Three:
I am aware that it is considered fashionable for boys of your age to wear their trousers so loosely that they appear to be falling off their hips. Please don't take this as an insult, but you and all of your friends are complete idiots. Still, I want to be fair and open minded about this issue, so I propose this compromise: You may come to the door with your underwear showing and your pants ten sizes too big, and I will not object. However, in order to ensure that your clothes do not, in fact come off during the course of your date with my daughter, I will take my electric nail gun and fasten your trousers securely in place to your waist.
Rule Four:
I'm sure you've been told that in today's world, sex without utilizing a 'Barrier method' of some kind can kill you. Let me elaborate, when it comes to sex, I am the barrier, and I will kill you.
Rule Five:
It is usually understood that in order for us to get to know each other, we should talk about sports, politics, and other issues of the day. Please do not do this. The only information I require from you is an indication of when you expect to have my daughter safely back at my house, and the only word I need from you on this subject is: 'early.'
Rule Six:
I have no doubt you are a popular fellow, with many opportunities to date other girls. This is fine with me as long as it is okay with my daughter. Otherwise, once you have gone out with my little girl, you will continue to date no one but her until she is finished with you. If you make her cry, I will make you cry.
Rule Seven:
As you stand in my front hallway, waiting for my daughter to appear, and more than an hour goes by, do not sigh and fidget. If you want to be on time for the movie, you should not be dating. My daughter is putting on her makeup, a process than can take longer than painting the Golden Gate Bridge. Instead of just standing there, why don't you do something useful, like changing the oil in my car?
Rule Eight:
The following places are not appropriate for a date with my daughter: Places where there are beds, sofas, or anything softer than a wooden stool. Places where there is darkness. Places where there is dancing, holding hands, or happiness. Places where the ambient temperature is warm enough to induce my daughter to wear shorts, tank tops, midriff T-shirts, or anything other than overalls, a sweater, and a goose down parka - zipped up to her throat. Movies with a strong romantic or sexual themes are to be avoided; movies which feature chain saws are okay. Hockey games are okay. Old folks homes are better.
Rule Nine:
Do not lie to me. I may appear to be a potbellied, balding, middle-aged, dimwitted has-been. But on issues relating to my daughter, I am the all-knowing, merciless god of your universe. If I ask you where you are going and with whom, you have one chance to tell me the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I have a shotgun, a shovel, and five acres behind the house. Do not trifle with me.
Rule Ten:
Be afraid. Be very afraid. It takes very little for me to mistake the sound of your car in the driveway for a chopper coming in over a rice paddy near Hanoi . When my Agent Orange starts acting up, the voices in my head frequently tell me to clean the guns as I wait for you to bring my daughter home. As soon as you pull into the driveway you should exit the car with both hands in plain sight. Speak the perimeter password, announce in a clear voice that you have brought my daughter home safely and early, then return to your car - there is no need for you to come inside.
The camouflaged face at the window is mine
